Church of St. Wenceslas
Mikulov (Czechia)
The traditional concert, Children and Music, will this year, for the fifth time, offer a joyful musical gathering of young performers from Czech and Austrian primary art schools. In the inspiring setting of the Church of St. Wenceslas in Mikulov, a varied programme will be presented by children’s chamber ensembles and soloists.
The concert is the result of international cooperation between pupils and teachers from both sides of the Czech-Austrian border and represents not only a musical but also a human connection across generations. Although of two different nationalities, music here becomes a common language of understanding and shared joy.

The Church of Saint Wenceslas is one of the most significant sacred monuments in Mikulov. Its history dates back to the 12th century, when a Romanesque church stood on this site. The current structure dates from the 15th century, with major reconstructions taking place in the 16th and 17th centuries under the rule of the Dietrichstein family. In 1625, they founded a collegiate chapter here, which continues to operate in Mikulov to this day. The dominant feature of the church is its Renaissance tower with an arcaded gallery, offering views of the historic town centre. The interior is adorned with rich Baroque decoration, including the main altar with a painting of the Assassination of St. Wenceslas by Franz Adolph of Freenthal. Another significant feature is the statuette of the Black Madonna and Child, originally from the Loreto Church of St. Anne. The church is connected to the castle by a covered corridor, and its oratory was intended for the nobility. Today, it is not only the spiritual centre of the town but also a popular venue for concerts of sacred and early music.
